Profile

Beate Hochholdinger-Reiterer studied theatre studies and German philology at the University of Vienna, where she received her PhD in 1996 and Habilitation in 2012 with the gender-theory thesis “Kostümierung der Geschlechter. 'Schauspielkunst' als Erfindung der Aufklärung”. She was funded by the FWF Elise Richter Excellence Program for her Habilitation. Since 2013, she has been Professor at the Institute of Theatre Studies (ITW), up to 2020 primarily working in the area of contemporary theatre. Since August 2020, she has the theatre history focus at the ITW. Her research interests include theatre history, gender studies, and history of theatre studies. She was director of the Graduate School of the Arts at the University of Bern from 2015 to 2017 and vice president of the Society for Theatre Studies from 2016 to 2022. She is currently a board member of the Swiss Society for Theatre Culture and international scientific partner in the inter-university research network Elfriede Jelinek at the University of Vienna and the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna.
