The dissertation project explores the artistic work of Compagnia Finzi Pasca, an internationally renowned Swiss theater company.
The research project at the Institute for Theater Studies at Bern University aim to analyze the dramaturgy of Compagnia Finzi Pasca’s productions, devising imaginary worlds on stage. Relevant topics, such as illness, death, the struggle for life and human fragility are elaborated through an aesthetic and philosophical approach named “Teatro della carezza”, a theater theory created by Compagnia Finzi Pasca’s main founders: Daniele Finzi Pasca, director, author and clown, and Maria Bonzanigo, composer and choreographer; and embraced by co-founders: Antonio Vergamini, author and producer, and Hugo Gargiulo, production designer and writer. These productions aim to foster a catharsis in the audience, outlined by the above mentioned theater theory.
The main objectives of this doctoral thesis are: the analysis of the dramaturgy of different shows, identifying a possible historical evolution; and the investigation on how the artistic and philosophical vision named “Teatro della carezza” finds its realization, by defining how different layers, such as the narrative, clown, acrobatics, the lighting, the stage design, music and video illustrate the theater process.
