Titleimage: Institute of Theater Studies

Our object of study is theatre culture in all its historical and aesthetic manifestations. Theatre studies aims to exert a long-term, qualitative influence on work in the theatre, on theatre criticism, the training of actors, theatre educators and media specialists, and engages in dialogue in order to achieve this. Swiss theatre historiography is involved in a longstanding project to create a “Theatre History of Switzerland”. Theatre theory analyses the configurations, functions, disparities and commonalities in the production and reception formats of Switzerland’s multifaceted theatre structures, and brings its results to bear on the international discourse around theatre. Dramaturgy is here engaged with production and development – in other words, it goes beyond our teaching activities to support theatre productions and (up-and-coming) dramatists. Performance analysis illuminates and documents the current theatre landscape in Switzerland and neighbouring countries.

The focal points of our work at the Institute are Swiss and European theatre history, contemporary theatre, dramaturgy, performance analysis, dance history, and contemporary dance.
